An Extension Lecture on Experiential learning was held on March 17th, Friday, 2023 at the Gitarattan Institute of Advanced Studies and Training and the speaker was Dr. S.K. Bhatia (Former Associate, Professor, CIE Department of Education, University of Delhi). Dr. S.K Bhatia has been associated with the Gitarattan family for more than 25 years. He has stood as the institution's anchor and is a foundation of academic success in all spheres.
Dr. S.K Bhatia sir started the lecture by talking about the importance and relevance of Experiential learning and how it is a need for effective and stable learning. He then mentioned how this extension lecture on experiential learning will be beneficial for us and covers most of the crucial details related to the topic.
After the brief introduction, Dr. S.K Bhatia talked about Professor David Kolb’s conception of experiential learning and that it is a process with steps that are intended to be in a sequence. The Model of Experiential Learning by Kolb was also highly informative and fascinating to learn about.
We further discussed the CBELM Model of experiential learning, which Dr. S.K Bhatia himself developed. In addition to this, we talked about examples of providing experiential learning where we discussed two modes: illustrative and concrete. Sir took the example of our Assistant Professor, Dr. Shikha Ranjan where he talked about how illustrative mode should be used to impart knowledge regarding abstract concepts like happiness, joy, etc.
After discussing all the aspects of Experiential learning, Sir concluded the lecture by talking about the advantages of experiential learning, including efficient and stable learning, more engaged students, creative and innovative teachers, reflective thinking, the development of abstract conceptualization skills, and the ability to apply knowledge in real-life contexts.
All the B.Ed Trainees and the faculty attended the lecture and it was a very illuminating session with Bhatia sir, as usual, and we were happy to have him because his expertise and direction are always very invaluable to us.
