Case Study Challenges through movie screening : “TAARE ZAMEEN PAR”

As it is a fact that being a teacher is not everybody's cup of tea, the journey of a student teacher is also quite interesting and challenging. The experiences are a concoction of sweet and bitter incidents. Unlike being just a student, in Gitarattan Institute of Advanced studies and training, the student teachers are prepared well to become successful teachers who can be set as the role models by their would-be students. a CASE STUDY BASED movie screening  Taare Zameen Par was organised in college as a part of B.ed curriculum of Reading and Reflecting on text. The objective of this course is to develop proficiency in reading reflecting and responding to a variety of written texts as well as various audio-visual resources in different ways. Therefore, the movie Tare Zameen par by Aamir Khan and Amol Gupte was screened for the student-teachers on 17.04.2023, Monday in the college AV room. The purpose of this screening is to enable the students reflect on the idea expressed in the movie, draft, edit and present a piece of writing related to our understanding of the movie.

According to NEP 2020.no child should be left behind in terms of educational opportunities because of their social, economic and cultural background and irrespective of any kind of special physical need. In the movie it is shown that Ishaan is rebuked by all his subject teachers due to poor grades and disinterest in his studies. They keep on complaining about Ishaan to his parents and busy punishing him and making him stand outside the classroom for the whole day. Here is where the schools need to understand that their duty is not to point out and make a child realise his faults and drawbacks, but they should take the responsibilities of a child's failure. A unsuccessful student means an unsuccessful teacher. Instead of finding out the flaws in the child, the teachers and the schools should analyse and realise why they have failed to strive the child from darkness to light. The educational institutions should be enough proficient to successfully run an inclusive and diverse classroom.

The true essence of the movie is action research in the teaching learning process. Action Research is a process of identification of problems concerned with individual students and finding customised solution according to child's need. It does not provide a general guideline but each solution is different for different students according to the issues they are facing in their learning or in their personal lives. In the movie Nikumbh Sir, asks the principal of the school to arrange special assessment criteria for Ishaan and took individual and special teaching methodology to help Ishaan in his difficulties of reading and writing. When everybody lost hope with Ishaan, even his own parents, Nikumbh Sir didn't give up and explored the hidden talent of painting within Ishaan.
